Monday again and another great day! 6/23/2008

Welcome to another week and here is what Matt and I talked about this morning:

BIG Twins
Doctors at Forsyth Medical Center in North Carolina believe a mother who gave birth last Tuesday to twins weighing a combined 23 pounds, 1 ounce, is a state record for the heaviest combined birth weight – and may be the second heaviest twins born in America in the past 100 years. Sean William Maynard was born weighing 10 pounds, 14 ounces, and his sister, Abigail Rose Maynard, weighed 12 pounds, 3 ounces. The parents say big babies run in the family. The twins were delivered via Cesarean section at 38 weeks.

World’s Ugliest Dog Crowned
A dog that’s missing a leg, eye and its fur was awarded $1,600 for winning the title of World’s Ugliest Dog at a fair in California. Gus, a Chinese-Crested, won the title at a contest Friday at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California. Gus was up against 11 other dogs from throughout the United States. The homely pup was given two trophies along with his award money, which his masters plan to use for radiation treatments. Gus is fighting skin cancer, which caused him to lose a leg. He lost his eye during a scuffle with a tomcat.

Toilet Paper Wedding Dress
An Illinois woman has been crowned this year’s winning wedding dress designer at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! in New York City. Her creation was a slinky white sheath dress made entirely of toilet paper. Six toilet paper dresses were displayed at the Times Square “odditorium” and three winning designers squared off for the top prize of $1,000. The judges were from Ripley’s, Charmin and Cheap-Chic-Weddings.com. The winner spent two weeks creating her dress with a raised flower pattern from molded toilet paper. The annual dress competition just celebrated its fourth year.

Dannielynn Inherits Anna Nicole’s Lingerie
Larry Birkhead wants to make sure Anna Nicole Smith’s memory lives on for their daughter, Dannielynn. On Saturday, Birkhead laid down almost $3,000 for lingerie worn by Anna for a Playboy centerfold photo shoot so his daughter can learn about her late mother’s life story.

Man Drops 80 Pounds At McDonald’s
Chris Coleson of Virginia lost 80 pounds in six months by eating nearly every meal at McDonald’s. Not Big Macs and french fries, but salads, wraps and apple dippers without the caramel sauce. Coleson tipped the scales at 278 pounds in December. At 5-foot-9-inches, he now weighs 199 pounds and his waist size has dropped from 50 to 36. Coleson, 42, says he chose McDonald’s because it’s convenient. His inspiration came from his two children and from the story of a blind war veteran who rode a tandem bicycle cross-country. Coleson’s goal is 185 pounds – what he weighed when he married his wife Tricia 10 years ago.

NASA Finds Evidence Of Ice On Mars
Scientists working on NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander mission say they’ve unearthed compelling evidence that ice is on Mars. The small probe landed last month on a frozen desert at the Martian north pole to search for water in an attempt to see if life could have existed on Mars. Small chunks of bright material described as the size of dice have disappeared from inside a trench where they were photographed. That led scientists to theorize that the chunks were ice that vaporized after digging exposed it.

Other things we talked about this morning:
A kangaroo may be on the loose on the campus of Pensacola Junior College in Florida. A school official says that a custodian saw what she thought was a kangaroo hopping around last Wednesday. They’ve checked with the Zoo and the circus but no one is missing a kangaroo…The entire situation is perplexing everyone.

A woman is alive today because of her bra! 24 year old Jessica Brown was hiking in the Austrian Alps when she fell off a ledge. She was stranded for nearly three days in cold weather while rescue workers were about to give up looking for her. She saw a Cable car and took off her bra and tossed it into the cable car which alerted searchers. One rescue worker said “It certainly beats sending up a flare.”

In the troubling housing market a Florida housing development is pushing a clothing optional swimming pool! The condo has two pools and are setting one aside for Nude swimmers, sunbathers and hot tubers. Additional landscaping and cabanas will be installed to shield the naked swimmers. No one under 18 will be allowed in the clothing-optional pool area.

What’s Cooking!

Katie Couric’s Tax Trouble
CBS anchorwoman Katie Couric is in trouble with New York State over a $210.41 tax bill. Couric allegedly owes the money from 2003. Couric’s rep characterized the debt as a minor oversight, saying her bills were being sent to an old address. Couric’s on vacation, he added, and will settle the matter upon her return.

Keith Urban figured out a way to make wife Nicole Kidman's birthday extra special. During his concert Saturday at Soldier Field in Chicago, Keith performed "Who Wouldn't Wanna Be Me" for his wife, who turned 41 on Friday. Then he asked the crowd of 50-thousand to join him in singing "Happy Birthday" to Nicole and brought her onstage. After the song, Nicole blew the audience a kiss and returned backstage. The Academy Award-winning actress is pregnant with the couple's first child, and is due any day

Gretchen Wilson will participate in T-N-T's "Embrace Your Grace" campaign promoting the network's Saving Grace, which stars Holly Hunter. The promotion also encourages viewers to celebrate who they are and to live life to its fullest. Gretchen has created a special video for her song "Work Hard, Play Harder" that will air on T-N-T, T-B-S and Tru T-V starting July 5th.

Country music newcomer Darius Rucker caught some grief from one fan on a social networking site for abandoning his trademark baseball hat and T-shirts. In his MySpace blog, he says that the fan accuses him of hiring a stylist and tells him, "For cryin' out loud, be yourself." Darius, who does not have a stylist, replies, "As for going back to the cap, dirty jeans, nasty T-shirt look that I had, I am a married father of three and I am 42 years old, so I don't think that I would be very comfortable with myself if I still dressed like a drunk college boy.

Britney Spears returned to L-A on Friday evening -- after going home to Louisiana for the birth of her first niece -- and promptly got into a fight with a group of photographers at the airport. During a scuffle involving about three-dozen paparazzi, one photographer reportedly had his camera shoved into his face by one of Brit's bodyguards. Police escorted the pop tart from the airport and the bruised shutterbug decided against pressing charges.

George Strait says he fits the description of a “Troubadour” which is also his latest single and the title cut from his most recent album. He says the name conjures up the romantic idea of a singer-songwriter.

The crowd who saw Sugarland perform at the recent CMA Music Fest watched as the duo crawled over the crowd in large, inflatable balls. Jennifer Nettles admits that fans can get ready for more concert surprises.

Farm Aid is using its family farm disaster fund to get immediate relief to family farmers in Iowa, Wisconsin, and other locations across the Midwest who are struggling with the recent floods in the region Willie says “At Farm Aid, we have had friends in these communities for 23 years who can deliver immediate support to family farmers. If you would like to donate go to http://www.farmaid.org/
