Authorities in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri, say a 50-year-old man who was supposed to report for jury duty in a drunk driving case decided to skip his civic duty so he could drink himself. Curtis Lemons received a summons to appear as a prospective juror. When he failed to show up on Monday, a bailiff called his house. When Lemons told the bailiff he was too busy to come to court, the judge instructed officers to bring him in. Officers say they detected a strong odor of alcohol on him. Lemons was held in custody while the DUI trial went on without him. After Lemons admitted he had been drinking that morning, he was charged with contempt of court and fined $250.

Americans don't often take it easy when they're sick.  A new poll commissioned by Puffs Plus shows that 69-percent of employees go to work even when they aren't feeling well -- usually because they have deadlines to meet.  A favorite home remedy for the flu is a hot bath or shower, with 58-percent noting it helps relieve their symptoms.  Nearly a quarter of those polled say they find the scent of menthol or eucalyptus helps them feel better.  In addition, 63-percent note they are more annoyed by people not covering their mouth when sneezing than they are by loud public cell phone conversations, and nearly as many could help remedy the situation.  Sixty-one-percent add that they typically carry tissue with them when they leave their homes.

A Georgia official is being investigated for using voodoo against an opponent.  The Georgia Bureau of Investigation says it is looking into allegations that metro Atlanta County Commissioner Annette Kesting hired a South Carolina voodoo priestess to prepare an untimely demise for a rival.  A police report obtained by Atlanta's Channel Two said Kesting, a Cobb County Commissioner, asked George Ann Mills to cause Commisioner-elect Woody Thompson to "catch cancer" or "have a car accident."  Mills went to police after Kesting allegedly paid her with two bounced checks.  Thompson, who defeated Kesting in a runoff primary, calls the alleged plot "bizarre" and "almost hard to believe."  Kesting dismissed the incident as "ridiculous."

Nick Nolte is one lucky actor. Nolte, 67, escaped a fire that cause an estimated $1.5 million in damage to his Malibu home yesterday. Nolte scraped his arm and inhaled some smoke but was not hospitalized. The fire was reported at 11:34 a.m. The electrical fire started in the living room, and Nolte apparently tried to put out the fire before firefighters arrived. Officials found Nolte outside using a hose in an attempt to extinguish the blaze.

How Bad Is Your 401k?

Americans’ retirement plans have lost $2 trillion in the past 15 months – about 20% of their value. As 401k plans race to see who can get to 0 the fastest, more than 50% of Americans polled in a recent survey admit they’re worried they’ll have to work longer because the value of their retirement savings has declined. A new AARP study found that one in five workers 45 and older has stopped putting money into a 401k, IRA or other retirement savings account during the past year, and nearly one in four has increased the number of hours he works. More than one-third of these workers have considered delaying retirement. The experts say the last thing you should do is pull your money out of a 401k. They note that of the last 10 times the market has declined at least 10%, nine times the market was up the following year.

A British couple spent more than three-thousand dollars on radiological treatments to cure their pet chicken of cancer -- and the therapy seems to have worked. "Eve," a three-year-old Sussex Buff Cross chicken, had to have her left leg amputated earlier this year due to the disease, but when it recurred, Elaine and Chris Denney opted to take the unusual step. Mrs. Denney says, "Eve is a pet to us. It doesn't matter if she has four legs, two, or, in this case, one. She jumps around the garden and responds to her name just like a cat or dog. She has so much personality. Anyone with a dog or a cat would probably take the same decision we have with our chicken.

· Democrats stay in and utilize delivery more. They are also more likely to pay with cash and like more variety with their orders.

· Consumers who are undecided about their political affiliation are most likely to order extra-large pizzas.

Officials in Dothan, Alabama, say a Houston County Jail inmate’s bid to escape on Saturday was foiled by a correctional officer. A 19-year-old man used a hidden hacksaw to cut through a cell bar, but a correctional officer saw the damage and searched the cell. He found the hacksaw in the back cover of a Bible. The man, who was awaiting trial for two armed robberies, now faces an escape charge. Investigators are trying to find out how the hacksaw was smuggled into the jail.

National Save for Retirement Week, now in its third year, will take place October 19-25. The annual event is the first national effort established by Congress to raise public awareness about the importance of saving for retirement. Traditional pension plan and Social Security benefits have long been the backbone of most workers’ income in retirement. However, financial experts agree that they may not be enough. Longer life spans and rising costs, especially for health care, has changed the retirement outlook for many Americans. A recent survey by the Employee Benefits Research Institute shows nearly half of all workers have less than $25,000 saved – and almost one in five workers have no savings at all.
