Fainting Goat Festival

Every year in October, fainting goats are honored in Marshall County, Tennessee. The festival is centered on goats, but also has activities including music, an arts and crafts show, food vendors, and children's activities.[5]

The Famous Fainting Goats of Marshall County, TN

The Goats, Music and More Festival aims to honor goats, particularly Marshall County's famous native "Fainting" goat and the Boer goat. The first recorded mention of "fainting" or "nervous" goats was from Marshall County, TN, during the 1880s, according to festival officials. A man named Tinsley moved into the northern part of the county bringing with him four "bulgy-eyed" goats and a "sacred" cow. The goats a strange tendency to become temporarily rigid, even to the point of losing balance and falling over when startled. Tinsley stayed long enough to marry and harvest a corn crop. He then left unexpectedly, leaving his wife but taking his cow. Before departing, he sold his goats to a local doctor; and the odd but otherwise healthy goats went on to reproduce and continue living in the area.

Fainting goats were almost extinct by the 1980s, but today the quirky breed is thriving throughout the world thanks to its novelty appeal. Their “stiff-legged” appearance and apparent “fainting” is caused by a neuromuscular condition called Myotonia. This condition does not harm the goat.

Fainting goat and Boer goat shows are the core of the festival; but visitors will also find a full slate of planned fun including and arts & crafts show, food vendors, children's activites and acoustic, bluegrass, country and rock and roll music. Bring your best barbeque recipe and enter the Kansas City Barbeque Society sanctioned Lewisburg Rotary Club BBQ Cook-Off or simply bring those taste buds and enjoy a unique taste of the South.

Admission Is Free • Just Bring a Lawn Chair to Enjoy the Nightly Music • Leashed Dogs Welcome

Kellie Pickler joined Trace Adkins for the premiere of the five-part series “Into the Circle” on GAC on Saturday. “Into the Circle” is a reference to the famous oak circle on the stage at the Grand Ole Opry. Each episode pairs a younger artist – like Kellie and Trace – sharing career highlights and singing together. Kellie says that while she enjoyed doing the GAC series, it wasn’t really acting, which she would love to try.

Variety reports that Jeff Foxworthy is creating a pilot for an animated show about a dysfunctional family set in the world of NASCAR.

Members of The Lost Trailers aren't embarrassed to admit they love animated films.  Band member Stokes Nielson says he'd jump at the chance to voice a Disney character, but speculates that he'd be tapped for a less-desirable role, a notion band mate Ryder Lee finds humorous. While Nielson says people have thought he watched such movies as "The Lion King" and "Ratatouille" with his daughter, he notes he enjoyed those films before he ever became a parent. Ryder Lee says that he shares Stokes Nielson's love of cartoons, and adds that the Disney/Pixar movie "Cars" is one of his favorite flicks.  On the musical front, The Lost Trailers' single "Holler Back" has cracked the top ten.  The song is the title track to the group's latest album.

A Utah couple is facing charges for turning a baby shower into a vicious brawl.  According to the "Salt Lake Tribune," the unnamed 40-year-old woman started a fight with a neighbor.  She allegedly then struck the other woman with a shovel, knocking her unconscious.  Police say her husband then loaded his shotgun and pointed it at the crowd of onlookers.  The couple has been charged with felony third-degree aggravated assault.  The husband was slapped with a resisting arrest charge as well.  No word on what instigated the fight.

A Billings, Montana, man has been charged with burglary after he allegedly broke into a home, ate from the refrigerator, made a mess in the bathroom, and fell asleep on a child’s bed. A woman awoke last Monday at 8:30 a.m. to the sound of snoring coming from her 2-year-old son’s bedroom. Her son had slept that night with her and her husband. When the woman found the strange man sleeping in her son’s bed, she woke her husband and left to call police from a neighbor’s house. The husband confronted Tracy Mullins with an unloaded shotgun and held him until police arrived. Mullins pleaded not guilty. His public defender said Mullins had been receiving mental-health counseling.

Yankee Stadium Is History

Baseball said goodbye to Yankee Stadium yesterday, ending 85 years of faithful service. The Yankees defeated the Orioles 7-3 in front of a sold-out crowd at “The House That Ruth Built.” The team will play next season in a $1.3 billion Yankee Stadium across the street. In addition to being home to the Yankees, the stadium also hosted many other events, including three popes, boxing matches and a rally for Nelson Mandela shortly after his release from prison. The stadium was gutted and renovated after the 1973 season.

‘Hannah Montana’ Wars

Miley Cyrus and her daddy Billy Ray want off “Hannah Montana” so bad that it has started an all-out war on the set. Miley has bragged that she will get fired from the Disney show. Miley and Billy Ray have allegedly been showing up late, stalling production, in an effort to tick off the rest of the cast and crew, according to TMZ. Billy Ray claims they’re only doing 12 more episodes, but the bosses at the Mouse House contacted their agents and said they would do 36 more episodes. They want out to concentrate on their music careers.

AMERICANS FALLING SHORT ON HAND HYGIENE

It's National Clean Hands Week, but Americans are getting a "C-minus" when it comes to hand hygiene.  The latest Clean Hands Report Card from The Soap and Detergent Association shows that just 85-percent say they always wash their hands after using the bathroom.  That's a seven-point drop from two years ago.  In addition, 46-percent of the more than 900 people surveyed said they spend less than 15-seconds washing their hands, which falls short of the 15-to-20-seconds of lathering recommended by The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  Nearly 40-percent say they don't soap up after coughing or sneezing, which is up three points from 2006.  Thirty-five-percent note they don't always wash their hands before eating lunch, a four-point increase over two years ago.

Note that the times below were calculated using AutumnalEquinox[] in the Mathematica application package Scientific Astronomer, which is accurate to within only an hour or so, and in practice gives times that differ by up to 15 minutes from those computed by the U.S. Naval Observatory (which computes September 23, 1999 at 11:31 UT instead of 11:23 UT and September 22, 2000 at 17:27 UT instead of 17:11).

A Georgia family got a windfall but has no plans to buy fancy cars.  Frank Skinner hit it big in the Georgia Lottery recently but doesn't intend to go crazy with the unexpected riches.  The 60-year-old says it won't change his family and he has no plans to, quote, "buy Porsches or anything like that."  He's going to make sure his grandkids and future grandkids are taken care of instead.  Skinner says they'll be smart with the winnings and will not show up on Oprah or Jerry Springer in the future just because they spent it all.

People.com says Jimmy Wayne was caught with his pants down -- literally -- at Oakland International Airport last Thursday.  While going through security, for some reason he couldn't make it through the metal detector without setting it off.  He removed his sweatshirt and a necklace, but that didn't make any difference.  Jimmy Wayne notes, quote, "Finally the TSA officer said something to the effect of, 'Remove your shorts,' and I thought to myself, 'Now that sounds a little weird, but I guess it's okay -- I mean they show guys in boxers in the Sunday paper ads, right?  I guess maybe between not having enough sleep and not understanding him, I don't know.  I did it!"  Wearing only a t-shirt and boxers Wayne was ready to try again, but notes the TSA officer, quote, "flipped."  He quickly tried to retrieve his shorts, only to see them disappear into the x-ray machine and, quote, "two Oakland Raiders-sized police officers come up to me."Wayne was cuffed and questioned for nearly a half-hour as he cleared up the misunderstanding.  The singer admits he was afraid he'd be taken to jail, noting that he was arrested as a teenager and his airport incident, quote, "brought back memories I didn't want to revisit."  He jokingly adds, quote, "At least my hair was fixed," since some passengers who walked by were snapping his picture with their cell phones.

Over the weekend I was cruizin the internet and I found a you tube video of Billy Ray Cyrus with a show his daughter Miley and her best friend have put together called the Miley and mandy show. He sings his new song ‘somebody said a prayer’ along with their dog and Noah is on the couch doing her on little dance too… It’s cute! The link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YT3-MaaO0Cw
