The Wife Rules!

Believe it or not, a new survey by The Pew Research Center finds that 43% of women make the decisions in the household, including who controls the TV remote! Men make more of the decisions in 26% of couples, while 31% said they split decision-making responsibilities equally. Other findings:

· 45% of women say they manage the money in the household.

· 26% of women say they decide what to watch on television, and 30% of men agree.

· Ironically, when asked “Who is a better leader?” women ranked higher than men in the areas of honesty, intelligence and other character traits. But only 6% surveyed said women would make better political leaders than men.

Bat Coffee

A Cedar Rapids, Iowa, woman got a little something extra with her morning coffee – a bat. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, the woman saw a bat in her house but wasn’t too worried about it. She set her automatic coffeemaker before going to bed and drank her coffee the next morning before discovering the bat in the filter later in the day when she went to clean it. The woman has undergone treatment for possible rabies. Health officials said the bat was sent to a lab but its brain was too cooked by the hot water to determine whether it had rabies.

A British couple has combined their love of each other with their love for fast food.  According to Ananova.com, Tom and Kerry Watts tied the knot recently.  But instead of having the traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for a "wedding burger."  A local restaurant cooked up a 42-pound cheeseburger that was over a foot-and-a-half wide.  Tom called the wedding memorable, adding, quote, "Not only did I get to marry the woman of my dreams, but I also got to have the burger of my dreams in the same day."  The burger was so large, it took three hours to cook and had to be cut in half with a saw.

A Wisconsin couple had the odds go in their favor when they spotted their stolen van while driving home from work.  Kevin and Holly Gray Brown Deer were on their way home on I-43 last week when they noticed a vehicle in front of them looked a lot like the stolen van they had just recently reported to police as missing.  They got close enough to recognize the license plate and knew for sure it was their stolen property.  Police got involved and stopped the van after a short chase.  Two of the four suspects were taken into custody and the Grays got back their van despite a little wear and tear.

Squatter Calls Cops, Gets Cuffed

Police in Lincoln, Nebraska, say a 25-year-old man called them last Wednesday night to say someone was trying to break into his apartment. When police arrived, they discovered it was the apartment manager trying to get into the apartment, which was supposed to be vacant. Police said someone had illegally changed the locks on the apartment. The man was arrested for squatting. Police also found more than three pounds of marijuana, equipment used to grow marijuana, and nearly $3,500 in cash in the apartment.

71-Year-Old Pregnant Grandfather

The staff at Curry General Hospital in Gold Beach, Oregon, gave 71-year-old grandfather John Grady Pippen some happy news – he’s pregnant! The paperwork stated, “Based on your visit today, we know you are pregnant.” Hospital administrator William McMillan says an errant keystroke caused the hospital’s computer to spit out the wrong discharge instructions. Pippen went to the hospital after suffering severe abdominal pain.

Josh Turner’s Band Member Marries Martha Stewart’s Assistant

Josh Turner and Martha Stewart attended a wedding over the weekend in Nashville for Turner band member Kevin Haynie and Stewart assistant Liesl Menning. The two met when Turner performed “Firecracker” on Stewart’s TV show last year. The wedding was filmed for a one-hour special to air on the Style network in December. Photos will also be featured in the winter edition of Martha Stewart Weddings magazine.

Josh Turner can add "matchmaker" to his resume, as can his pal, domestic diva Martha Stewart.  Turner first met Martha in 2006, when he appeared on her TV show "MARTHA" and she surprised him with a Gold plaque for his album "Your Man."  The two quickly became friends, and Stewart invited Turner back to her show for a 2007 performance of his tune "Firecracker."  That set off some sparks on the set between Turner's backing musician Kevin Haynie and Stewart's assistant Liesel Menning.  The happy couple tied the knot in Nashville over the weekend, with Stewart and Turner both in attendance.  Photos from the wedding will be featured in the winter edition of "Martha Stewart Weddings" magazine.  The ceremony was also filmed for a one-hour "Style Network" special that will air in December.

Memorial services for actor Paul Newman will be private.  Lissy Newman, the daughter of the 83-year-old screen legend says people wanting to pay tribute to her father should do so by showing kindness to friends, donating money to charity or by voting in the upcoming elections.  Speaking to reporters, Lissy said, quote, "Just look out for each other.  That's really what he was all about.  He was awesome to the end, and he is an awesome guy and his spirit will be with us forever and ever and ever."  Meantime, Paul Newman's friends and colleagues continue to share their thoughts about the screen icon.  Newman's "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" co-star Robert Redford says he is "beyond words" in grappling with the news of the death of his friend and colleague.  People.com quotes a statement from Redford which says, "I have lost a real friend.  My life - and this country - is better for his being in it."  Redford and Newman also co-starred in 1973's "The Sting."

Hollywood celebrities can continue to drive with animals nestled in their laps. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger is vetoing a bill to fine motorists 35 dollars for sharing the driver's seat with lapdogs or other animals. Republican Assemblyman Bill Maze says the practice is distracting. He introduced the bill after seeing a woman driving with three dogs on her lap. Schwarzenegger says he's signing only bills that are "the highest priority for California." And a lapdog ban isn't one of them.

Jimmy Wayne will be demonstrating his talents on the gridiron tonight.  His skills are musical, not athletic, so he'll be singing the national anthem prior to the kickoff of the Baltimore Ravens-Pittsburgh Steelers game on ESPN's "Monday Night Football."  Wayne will also entertain the Heinz Field crowd during halftime, performing his recent number one hit "Do You Believe Me Now" and his upcoming single, "I Will," which is slated to hit country radio next week.  Wayne will return to Nashville Tuesday to shoot the video for the song.  "Do You Believe Me Now" is the title cut from Wayne's recently released CD, his first album in five years.  The project debuted in the top five on the "Billboard" Country Albums chart last month.

Alan Jackson says he's not that worried about his daughters dating, and he's not the type to threaten their boyfriends.  While the singer admits he has concerns, he notes that he's confident in his girls' abilities to pick decent guys. Jackson's oldest, Mattie Denise, turned 18 over the summer, while 15-year-old Alexandra Jane and eleven-year-old Dani Grace celebrated birthdays last month.  His latest single is "Country Boy," perhaps about the type of young man he would like to see his girls eventually settle down with.

Kellie Pickler’s second album will be released tomorrow. Kellie says she decided to call the album “Kellie Pickler” for one simple reason – it is all Kellie Pickler.

James Otto has been added to the star-studded lineup of the 5th Annual American Freedom Festival. Otto will perform at the benefit concert on October 25th. Joining him will be Trace Adkins and Alan Jackson. The event will be broadcast by the Pentagon Channel to 350 military bases in 177 countries. The American Freedom Festival will benefit the American Freedom Foundation, an organization that honors American veterans and raises money for various veterans’ organizations.

Taylor Swift and Def Leppard will tape a “CMT Crossroads” special. Tickets for the show, which tapes on October 6th, are up for auction at CMTauctions.com. Proceeds go to Hands On Nashville, which encourages volunteerism. Bidding ends October 2nd.

Wanna look like Tim McGraw? In promoting with his new cologne, Tim is holding an online contest in which a male fan can win a makeover and fashion consultation in Nashville. Included in the prize package is a round trip airfare, dinner for two in Music City and a thousand-dollar shopping spree and hair styling. If you don't want to look like Tim, you can at least smell like him. His new cologne, McGraw, is already in the marketplace. Before it hit stores, Tim couldn't imagine his name on a bottle of cologne. He says, "Everybody did a great job of packaging and the fragrance is excellent and even my wife likes it so that says a lot."

The unsung heroes behind many of country's hottest tunes got their due at the World's Largest Number One Party.  Last week, the Nashville Songwriters Association International partnered with the Country Music Association and Avenue Bank to honor more than 40 songwriters who penned the 24 songs that reached the top of the charts from July 2007 to July 2008.  But a number of stars were also honorees.  Keith Anderson, who co-wrote Big & Rich's chart topper "Lost In This Moment;" Kenny Chesney, who helped write Rascal Flatts' hit "Take Me There;" and Brad Paisley, Alan Jackson, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, and James Otto, who wrote or co-wrote their own hits, also received recognition.

Charlie Daniels fans are in for a special treat.  The legendary performer is set to release the concert DVD "Preachin', Prayin', Singin with Charlie Daniels and Friends: Live from Nashville'" on November 11th.  The performance was taped at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum in 2005, when Daniels' debuted songs from his Grammy-nominated gospel/bluegrass CD "Songs from the LongLeaf Pines."  The iconic fiddle player invited several of his bluegrass heroes to join him.  Guest pickers included Mac Wiseman; Earl, Gary, and Randy Scruggs; members of the McCoury family; and Sharon, Cheryl, and Buck White.  The DVD also includes commentary from Daniels as he reflects on the early days of the Charlie Daniel's Band playing with The Earl Scruggs Review in the late '60s and his thoughts on his pal Wiseman.
