According to the Wall Street Journal, the Consumer Product Safety Commission is recalling all of about 600,000 cribs made by Simplicity. The recall comes weeks after the CPSC recalled 900,000 Simplicity bassinets, linked to the deaths of two infants. The cribs affected are Simplicity brand dropside cribs sold by Wal-Mart, Target and Babies “R” Us.
Jessica Simpson Nets First No. 1
Jessica Simpson’s “Do You Know” is at the top of the country charts after selling more than 65,000 copies in its first week of release. It is the first time Simpson has attained a No. 1 album on any chart.
Reba McEntire will be honored with the prestigious ASCAP Golden Note Award during the 46th Annual ASCAP Country Music Awards ceremony, set for October 13th in Nashville. The invitation only gala will also salute the songwriters and publishers of ASCAP’s most performed country songs of the past year. A party honoring the night’s winners will follow the ceremony.
Hank Williams Jr. will be presented the BMI Icon award during the performing rights organization’s 56th annual Country Awards on November 11th in Nashville. Williams will be honored with an all-star musical tribute during the ceremony. Hank Jr. wrote many of his biggest hits, including “All My Rowdy Friends Have Settled Down,” “Country Boy Can Survive,” “Born to Boogie,” “Dixie on My Mind,” “Family Tradition,” “Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound” and “Texas Women.”

Twin brothers who serve as police officers in adjoining Virginia towns joined forces to save the life of a jogger who collapsed on the city line. The brothers were on the phone with each other Monday morning when Justin Bowman got a call about a medical emergency in Chesapeake. When the location was changed to Virginia Beach, he alerted his brother, Brandon, and the two officers both went to the scene, where they found a man unconscious and not breathing. Justin performed CPR and Brandon used an external defibrillator. By the time an ambulance arrived, the man had a pulse and was breathing.
Connecticut State Police are trying to find an electronic message sign used by the Department of Transportation to provide information to motorists on I-84 in Waterbury. The sign measures 4-by-6 feet and is mounted on a two-wheel trailer. The sign is worth $20,000.
A judge has ruled that a law banning saggy pants in Riviera Beach, Florida, is unconstitutional. The judge made his ruling after a 17-year-old spent a night in jail on accusations he exposed too much underwear because of his saggy pants. Julius Hart’s public defender asked the judge to strike down the law, telling him, “Your honor, we now have the fashion police.” The judge agreed. Voters in Riviera Beach approved the law in March. A first offense for sagging pants carries a $150 fine or community service. Habitual offenders face the possibility of jail time.

Microsoft founder Bill Gates is the richest person in the United States for the 15th year in a row, according to Forbes’ ranking of the 400 wealthiest Americans. Dropouts this year include former AIG chief Maurice Greenberg, and former eBay chief Meg Whitman. Of the 400 on the list, 126 saw their fortunes decline – six times as many as last year. Gates topped the list with $57 billion, down from $59 billion last year. Investor Warren Buffett came in second with $50 billion, followed by Oracle founder Larry Ellison, who is worth $27 billion. After being booted out last year by Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page, four members of the Waltons family, descendants of Wal-Mart founder

Kellie Pickler has been chosen to be this year's Times Square correspondent for Dick Clark's New Years Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest. The versatile Kellie has designs on doing more on the small screen. She told the Arizona Republic, "I've always been interested in television. Maybe in the future I can do T-V to kind of give me a break from the music thing, to kind of clear my head and try something new."
Kenny Chesney's done some incredible things -- from sharing the stage with some of the greats in music to training with football's New Orleans Saints. But there is one thing Kenny would like to do before his life is over -- swim with the sharks. He says, "I was watching this thing on T-V the other day how these people would go and get in these cages and swim with sharks. I was like, 'Wow, that would be a rush.'" Update: Bathroom Cleaner Gets The Golden Plunger
Michigan businessman Steve Oswald won’t get paid for cleaning a public restroom, but he is getting a golden plunger. Oswald billed the city of Saugatuck $156 after cleaning a public restroom himself. Oswald admits he didn’t think he would get reimbursed for his restroom duty. Officials are recognizing his civic spirit with what they’re calling the Golden Plunger Award. It’s a toilet plunger spray-painted gold and mounted on an oak stand.
