Reruns of “Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood” won’t be seen on many PBS stations this season. Even though the show’s star, Fred Rogers, died five years ago and new episodes have not been taped for seven years, many people are still upset the children’s TV staple has been ousted from the 2008-09 lineup to make way for new shows. Stations in Chicago, Los Angeles and New York are among those dropping the program, mainly due to a dip in ratings. “It sucks, man,” Brian Linder, a South Carolina writer and parent who established the Web site www.savemisterrogers.com told the Chicago Tribune. “That’s not a Mr. Rogers thing to say. But maybe in this case he’d even say it.” PBS said episodes of the show might eventually be posted online.

It was supposed to be a spectacular kick-off to the football season – two skydivers parachuting into the stadium with the game ball. Unfortunately they jumped into the wrong stadium. The parachutists were supposed to land at North Carolina’s season-opening game on Saturday. But they ended up eight miles away as Duke and James Madison players were warming up for their game. UNC assistant athletic director Michael Beale said the jump had been canceled because of bad weather. But as clouds cleared, the pilot spotted a stadium and the skydivers jumped – completely off target.

A printer manufacturer wants to help you print less junk. When you print an article off the Web, it sometimes includes several pages of logos, links, ads or other items. Lexmark’s latest toolbar gives users the ability to block those images from being printed, which saves paper and ink. It even strips the graphics off “printer-friendly” sites that still attach a logo. Most of the features work whether you have a Lexmark printer or one from another manufacturer. The toolbar is available for Internet Explorer and for Firefox. To get yours, search “toolbar” at www.lexmark.com

I have to say this couple is nutty about their nuts!
Joyce and Bob Spontak are nuts about Mr. Peanut. They have more than 3,000 collectibles featuring the nutty guy. Joyce says she began the collection in 1980 when she bought a Mr. Peanut bank to replace the one her grandmother had given her as a teenager. She admits she tossed out the original bank because she was “too cool” for Mr. Peanut.

“The Dark Knight” has become the second movie in Hollywood history to top $500 million at the domestic box office, raising its total on Sunday to $502.4 million, according to estimates from distributor Warner Bros. The film hit that mark in just over six weeks, half the time it took “Titanic.” “Titanic,” the biggest modern blockbuster, remains No. 1 on the domestic charts with $600.8 million.

‘Tropic Thunder’ Tops Holiday Box Office
“Tropic Thunder” took in $14.3 million and remained No. 1 at the box office over the weekend, hurt in part by Hurricane Gustav. The movie has been No. 1 for three straight weekends, raising its total to $86.6 million. The top five movies over the weekend include:
1. “Tropic Thunder” $14.3 million
2. “Babylon A.D.” $12 million
3. “The Dark Knight” $11 million
4. “The House Bunny” $10.2 million
5. “Traitor” $10 million

Gustav slammed into Louisiana yesterday, swiping New Orleans as it moved inland. It was the first test of New Orleans’ new and improved levees, which are still being rebuilt three years after Hurricane Katrina. The storm crashed ashore as a Category 2 and by late yesterday was downgraded to a tropical storm with sustained winds of 60 mph. A mandatory evacuation and curfew remained in effect, and nearly 80,000 remained without power. Gustav is expected to dump huge amounts of water on other parts of Louisiana and Texas and damage could reach $10 billion. Hurricane Hanna could hit the southeastern U.S. by midweek, while Tropical Storm Ike and still another system behind it may wreak more havoc in the coming days.

A man from Michigan survived a hot air balloon crash in South Carolina after the balloon’s basket got caught in a tree about 10 feet above the ground. Chuck Walz broke his leg and pelvis in Sunday morning’s crash at a balloon festival in Anderson, South Carolina.

Google is releasing its own Web browser. The free browser, called “Chrome,” is supposed to be available for downloading today in more than 100 countries for computers running on the Windows operating system. The test version of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, IE8, will be released next week. (I still haven't found the link but will post it once I have found it)

Jerry Lewis’ annual Muscular Dystrophy fundraising telethon asked viewers to help victims of Hurricane Gustav. Lewis used the annual Labor Day telethon to encourage families registered with MDA who are being evacuated from their homes to seek out MDA services when they reach shelters or other destinations. MDA said it has almost 5,000 registered families in the areas affected by the Gulf Coast evacuation. Lewis asked viewers of the 43rd Annual Telethon not only to donate, but also to give to the Salvation Army’s Emergency Disaster Services. Jerry Lewis raised a record $65 million, $1.2 million more than last year.

Now this is truly a random act of kindness:
Michelle Secreto says someone left a $1,000 tip on her table at the Montarra Grill in Algonquin, Illinois. Secreto says she’s doesn’t know the name of the couple who left her the tip. She says they asked about a gluten-free meal and she told them to try two seafood specials. Secreto says she’ll use the money for her 12-year-old daughter’s school trip to Washington.

A man who was stabbed twice during a fight in a Salt Lake City park paid his assailant 30 dollars to stop knifing him. In jail documents, police report that an altercation broke out last week between the two men. One of the men pulled out a knife, chased the other down and began stabbing him. The victim suffered two "very deep" cuts in his arm and then gave the man 30-dollars "to quit cutting him." The man is lodged in the Salt Lake County jail.

Kix Brooks says it’s ironic that Barack Obama used Brooks & Dunn’s “Only in America” to close his acceptance speech last Thursday night at the Democratic National Convention in Denver, but admits he’s flattered. George W. Bush used the song, a No. 1 hit for the duo in 2001, as a campaign song during his 2004 re-election bid. Brooks & Dunn also appeared at events promoting Bush’s candidacy. Brooks said, “Seems ironic that the same song Bush used at the Republican Convention last election would be used by Obama and the Democrats now. Very flattering to know our song crossed parties and potentially inspires all Americans.”

John McCain’s running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, dropped two bombs yesterday. She announced that her 17-year-old unmarried daughter is pregnant and plans to keep the baby. Palin also announced she has hired a lawyer as Alaska investigates the firing of her public safety commissioner. Palin hired the lawyer three weeks ago to act on her behalf as state legislators investigate whether she may have abused her power in firing the commissioner for refusing to fire her ex-brother-in-law, a state trooper. A spokesman said McCain was aware of Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he chose her mother for his running mate.

Joe Nichols will be inducted into the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame. Nichols is among eight Arkansas entertainers slated to receive the honor on November 15th. Other inductees include The Wilburn Brothers and late blues legend Sonny Boy Williamson. Good for Joe!
Even though his latest album is still relatively new, Phil Vassar has already started writing his next record. Vassar says he writes all the time to keep ahead of the game and “that way when it’s time to do a record I have 20 or 30 songs to pick from.” Vassar says he already has several songs cut for the next record. Vassar’s “Prayer of a Common Man” album was released in April. The latest single is “I Would.”

Craig Morgan’s new studio album, “That’s Why,” is scheduled for release on October 21st. Morgan co-wrote the lead single, “Love Remembers.” In fact, he wrote six of the album’s 10 tracks.

Martina McBride thinks that the key to her success is that, as a wife and working mother, she has a lot in common with many of her fans. She tells Illinois' Naperville Sun, "I think there's just something in me that's really down to earth and normal and relatable, and they see somebody they feel they could have lunch with." Martina says her home life is consumed with helping her three girls with their homework, doing laundry and picking up after her family. She tells us, "I'm not magic, I do it the same way anybody else does it, which is, you just do it."In between tour dates, Martina has been in the studio working on a new C-D.

After 50 years in the music business, Kenny Rogers is thinking about retiring. Kenny says his next album may be his last, because of family obligations – his new twins. Rogers says, “They say having kids at my age either makes you or breaks you, and I’m leaning heavily toward break right now.” He turned 70 on August 21st. Rogers came out with a career retrospective CD last week called “Kenny Rogers: 50 Years.” It’s being sold exclusively through Cracker Barrel restaurants. The 12-track CD includes his classic hits and three new songs.

Sheryl Crow and 16-month son Wyatt are settled into life on her 154-acre farm just outside of Nashville. The singer-songwriter tells "People" magazine that she feels at home and at peace on the farm. She notes that she takes Wyatt on the road with her, but when they're at home they often call friends Faith Hill or Sara Evans just to hang out. Evans tells the publication, quote, "We get our kids together and just talk as girlfriends. That's really the attitude of Nashville, being available for your friends." Crow is touring in support of her "Detours" album, but she's also gearing up to release her new clothing line, Bootheel Trading Co. She'll make an appearance to show off the new apparel at Dillards in Cool Springs, which is just south of Nashville, on September 12th. Sheryl's feature is in the current issue of "People," on newsstands now.

Faith Hill is encouraging her fans to help those who have been evacuated from their homes because of Hurricane Gustav. Faith posted a message on her website asking fans to donate supplies to shelters and local churches who are to the region to lend a hand. Supplies that are most needed include bottled water, baby formula, diapers, flashlights and batteries.

Garth Brooks and the family pop group Hanson were on hand for a ribbon-cutting at the new BOK Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma Saturday. Though Garth isn't scheduled to play at the arena, he told the Tulsa World, "Some of the greatest artists in the world will be coming through here, and I can only hope that I will be one of them."

Trisha Yearwood will soon be greeting people visiting Georgia. The singer's music will be featured in welcome centers across her home state in a program initiated by The Georgia Department of Economic Development.
LeAnn Rimes and husband Dean Sheremet, who were married in 2002, renewed their vows Saturday. "In Touch Weekly" reports that the couple held their ceremony at the Calistoga Ranch in the Napa Valley area of California.

Rumors are once again swirling around Carrie Underwood, and this time she's being coupled with multiple gold-medal Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps. According to the National Enquirer, the pair has exchanged digits and are texting and calling to set up a date in Nashville. Apparently the country star suggested dinner and the athlete feared his 12-thousand calorie a day diet would not make a good impression, so plans are still uncertain...as is the validity of the budding relationship.

Toby Keith, Clint Black, Joe Nichols, and Jessica Simpson will take part in ABC's "America United: In Support of our Troops." The two-hour special was taped at Camp Pendleton, and includes footage from shows in Iraq and Fort Benning, Georgia. The feature will highlight performances, human interest stories, and special tributes to U.S. soldiers around the world. Also included in the show are ZZ Top, Snoop Dogg, Janet Jackson, Sam Moore, and Jordin Sparks. "America United: In Support of our Troops" will air on ABC Sunday night at 9:00 p.m. Eastern.

That wraps up another Tuesday, the first of the month! Make sure to join Carolina Country Cruizin with Matt and Dee tomorrow! Keep it rolling with Wheelz 100.5!
