Finally Friday Mattless! 7/11/08

That's it! Mattless now more on Monday! Carolina Cruizin with Matt and Dee returns! In case you missed the show this morning this is what I talked about.

Stopping alcohol consumption can be detrimental to your mental health. According to the Bowles Center for Alcohol Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, studies on mice that voluntarily liquored up for 28 days showed that when their alcohol consumption was stopped, it caused depression and a negative mood that set in 14 or more days after their systems were cleared of alcohol. This led scientists to believe that people who quit drinking, even moderate drinkers, will experience “negative mood states” days or weeks after the alcohol is out of their bodies.

Any celebrity who sits down with William Shatner on his upcoming Bio Channel talk show can expect a real grilling on sensitive issues. That’s why the show is called “Shatner’s Raw Nerve.” It starts August 19th. Throughout the season, guests will include Leonard Nimoy, Jon Voight, Judge Judy, Jimmy Kimmel, Kelsey Grammer, Valerie Bertinelli and Jenna Jameson, among others.

Colin Farrell has reportedly left an apologetic note with his contact information on a vehicle he hit with his car in a Hollywood parking lot. TMZ.com posted a copy of the note Farrell apparently left on the damaged car. It reads: “Did a bad thing. Deepest apologies. Of course my insurance will cover it. Mobile phone number 310-... Again, regrets. Colin Farrell.”

Country Music has more than one star with young babies at home. Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman made headlines this week with the birth of their daughter, Sunday Rose Kidman Urban. Others with recent arrivals include Rascal Flatts’ Joe Don Rooney, Darryl Worley, Trent Tomlinson, Luke Bryan, Brad Paisley and Josh Turner, who welcomed Hampton Otis Turner in October 2006. Josh says little Hampton has quite a vocabulary – “or so he thinks.” Josh says, “He’s learning new words every day, and it’s just mind-boggling how fast they grow and develop. He’s a comedian. He keeps us laughing.” Josh will perform in Virginia and Ohio this weekend.

Jessica Simpson will premiere her latest music video for her first country single, “Come On Over,” on her Web site – www.jessicasimpson.com – today. The video can be seen online only until Monday, when it makes its national premiere on “Extra.” The video was shot at Little Creek Ranch in southern California. “Come On Over” is from Simpson’s country debut, “Do You Know?” due out September 9th.

Phil Stacey will make his first televised appearance on the Grand Ole Opry tomorrow night. Stacey will perform songs from his recently-released self-titled CD, including the single “If You Didn’t Love Me,” co-written by Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox. The Grand Ole Opry airs live at 8 p.m. [ET] on GAC. Stacey’s first Opry experience was on March 29th. He made a name for himself during his competition on the sixth season of “American Idol.” His self-titled debut CD was released in April.

A Sacramento couple was shocked and confused when their dog received a $142.34 bill from VerizonOnline. Steve Fanelli and Shawn Donovan said their Lhasa Apso named Andy Fanelli received a notice in the mail from AFNI collections informing the canine he owes $142.34 for Verizon service. Verizon said the bill was meant for a man named Andy Fanelli, who lives on the other side of the country. AFNI said the confusion may have resulted from the fact that the canine Andy Fanelli has his own American Express card, which Donovan obtained when it was offered for “family members.”

The work crews will still be there, but “Men Working” signs are a thing of the past on roads around metro Atlanta. The city is replacing about 50 “Men Working” signs with “Workers Ahead” signs after a woman complained. Officials said it makes sense since women also work on the road repair crews. It will cost the city $22 each to repaint the old signs and $144 for new ones. Officials at the Georgia Department of Transportation will be asking contractors working on state highway projects to replace their “Men Working” signs will more gender friendly ones.

Zoo in Amsterdam. The cubs were rejected by their mother and one didn’t make it. But a Dutch
zookeeper says his cat has allowed the surviving panda to join her litter of four kittens. Zoo officials say the panda cub will drink the cat’s milk for about three months before switching to its regular diet of bamboo and fruit.

A Southern California man has set a new Guinness World Record for sitting… and sitting… and
sitting. Jim Purol has set the record for the “Most Seats Sat in 48 Hours.” Jim sat in 39,250 seats at the Rose Bowl. He began the task Monday morning, and he’s still going. He hopes to rest his tush in each of the stadium’s 92,542 seats by the end of the week. The 56-year-old, who already holds several other world records, says he has dreamed of tackling the Rose Bowl seats for 20 years – ever since he sat in all 107,501 chairs at the University of Michigan’s football stadium.

The Second Annual LG National Texting Competition has come to a close. LG Mobile Phones has
crowned another winner in their quest for fast and furious thumbs. The fastest texters from all over the country gathered in New York City on Wednesday to participate in a grueling battle of the thumbs. Beating more than 15,000 entrants, Nathan Schwartz, a 20-year-old from Clyde, Ohio, took home the title and $50,000 in prize money. The winning phrase was: “Does everybody here know the alphabet? Let’s text. Here it goes ... AbcDeFghiJKlmNoPQrStuvWXy & Z! Now I know my A-B-C’s, next time won’t you text with me?” Schwartz completed the message in 60 seconds.

Four of America’s ugliest yards have been identified, and now it’s up to you to decide which two will receive some landscaping cash, yard care equipment, and a house call from Yard Doctor Trey Rogers. You have to vote by July 23rd at www.myuglyyard.com. The finalists are yards that tip the ugly scale for different reasons. One includes a collection of lawn ornaments while others just gradually slipped into the ugly zone. Yard Doctor Trey Rogers has more than 20 years experience to help get that ugly yard back into shape. He’s also the author of the “Lawn Geek.”

Most people have friends at work, but enemies could be more prevalent than you might think. Half of advertising and marketing executives polled by The Creative Group said a colleague has tried to make them look bad on the job. According to the survey, professionals who are sabotaged by a coworker shouldn’t let the situation slide. Seven out of 10 said it’s best to confront the offender. Respondents were asked, “In general, what do you think is the best response when a colleague tries to make you look bad on the job?” Their responses:
1. Confront the person directly 70%
2. Notify the person’s manager 10%
3. Alert your colleagues to the situation 5%
4. Do nothing 5%
5. Other/don’t know 10%

The new, tenth season of the CBS "somebody's always watching" reality competition is almost here. The latest "Big Brother" cast will include a 75-year-old great grandfather among the 13 contestants competing for the 500-thousand-dollar prize. The show, which locks its participants away from the rest of the world with cameras on them 24 hours a day, seven days a week, has traditionally featured 20-somethings in its cast. "Big Brother" executive producer Allison Grodner tells "Entertainment Weekly" that it is the "most diverse" group of competitors the show has ever had. "Big Brother 10" premieres this Sunday, July 13th, at 8:00 p.m. Eastern on CBS. It will once again be hosted by "The Early Show" personality Julie Chen.

Looks like supermodel Christie Brinkley is the big winner in her divorce battle with ex-husband Peter Cook. A settlement was reached early Thursday morning after an intense night of negotiations. It gives Brinkley sole custody of their two children, 13-year-old Jack and ten-year-old Sailor, as well as all 18 properties she owns in the Hamptons. Brinkley has agreed to pay Cook two-point-one-million-dollars. Cook is allowed to have "parenting time" with their kids, but Brinkley has all of the decision making power. Brinkley says that the settlement marks a "very bittersweet moment" because it is the "death of a marriage," but adds that she is "pleased with the results." Brinkley and Cook's ten year marriage ended two years ago, after reports surfaced that he had had an affair with his teenage assistant.

Batman is making his presence felt in New York. The comic book hero's famous Bat Signal was projected onto Manhattan's historic Woolworth building Wednesday night in a surprise unveiling that capped a clue-filled scavenger hunt for Batman fans. The stunt was part of an ongoing promotional campaign for the upcoming Batman sequel "The Dark Knight," which opens in theaters on July 18th. In addition, a massive billboard featuring Heath Ledger as Batman nemesis the Joker now stands on New York's Houston street -- just two blocks from the apartment where Ledger died from an accidental prescription drug overdose in January. Tickets for "The Dark Knight" are in high demand, with many theaters adding 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. screenings on opening day after selling out midnight showings. "The Dark Knight" has already outpaced the recent "Indiana Jones" movie, "Iron Man," and "Sex and the City" as Fandango's fastest ticket-seller of this summer.

A newly-rich British couple hopes they can get their son married off. Ananova.com reports Bob and Pat Green recently won a nearly five-million-dollar lottery jackpot. But the pair of 60-somethings say what they really want is to find a bride for their son Stewart. The 33-year-old still lives at home with his parents. Bob Green says they're hoping Stewart can find a "rich lady with sporting interests." Bob and Pat also plan to keep working in the auto garage they own.

Rascal Flatts will perform on NBC's "Today" show this morning as part of the program's "Summer Concert Series." The trio will treat the audience to their single "Bob That Head" and several other hits.

Lady Antebellum's meteoric rise has left the trio scrambling to figure out how to fit their lives into a very hectic schedule. The group tells Exeter, California's Sun-Gazette that they've been out on the road so much that they barely have time to catch up with their families or even do their laundry. But they wouldn't have it any other way. Charles Kelley says, "We are out of town a lot and it takes time just to get used to all the traveling, but you don't really consider it hard work because you are doing what you love." Hillary Scott had to set some road rules while traveling with her male band mates -- such as putting the toilet seat down. She says, "I very rarely nag about anything, but I'm going to be a stickler about this because it's disgusting."

Kellie Pickler filmed the video for her new single, "Don't You Know You're Beautiful," yesterday at Vanderbilt's children's hospital in Nashville -- and included some of the patients in the clip. MusicCityTV-dot-com reports that after leaving the hospital, Kellie moved on to a local high school to stage more scenes. The song, which has become something of an anthem for women and girls, is very special to Kellie. She says, "I'm so in love with this song, I think it has such a positive, powerful message."

Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman are looking for a place to call home in London while Nicole films the movie Nine. According to London's Daily Mail, rehearsals for the film have been pushed back so Nicole can bond with her baby, Sunday Rose. The movie, which also stars Daniel Day-Lewis, Penelope Cruz, Sophia Loren and Kate Hudson, begins filming in October.
