Hey it was a roles reversed day with Matt sitting in the side kick seat and I got to sit in the hot seat. Boy was it fun. It will continue tomorrow on the show as I get ready to do the show Mattless as he takes vacation next week. So if you missed the show this morning here is your update:
Lonestar will be entertaining the troops this Fourth of July. Tomorrow the group will perform on the 25th Annual Independence Day at McConnell - Talbert Stadium in Warner Robins, Georgia. The show will be edited into a one-hour television special that will be shown on the Armed Forces Network on July 4th. The members of Lonestar give back to the troops as often as they can ,and now they have even more reason to do so. The younger sister of lead vocalist Cody Collins is in the service, and has just completed basic training. Additionally, lead guitarist Michael Britt and his wife, Renee, are very active in "Adopt a Platoon."
Taylor Swift has always thought that if she ever got to tape "CMT Crossroads," it should be with Def Leppard. The young singer will get her wish this fall. She's slated to team up with the veteran rockers in October, and the show will have its premiere on CMT November 8th. Taylor says, quote, "I have been screaming the words to Def Leppard songs for years so it's amazing that I'm going to get to share a stage with them." Def Leppard frontman Joe Elliot returns the compliment, saying quote, "How cool is this? Country's hottest young star wants to work with us?" Previous pairings on the show have included Bon Jovi and Sugarland, John Fogerty and Keith Urban, Joss Stone and LeAnne Rimes, and most recently Maroon 5 and Sara Evans.
Hootie and the Blowfish's frontman is going country. Darius Rucker's single "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" is in the top 20 on the country charts, and he'll soon do something he says he's been waiting for his whole life. The singer is slated to be a guest on the Grand Ole Opry on July 15th. Rucker says that when he was asked if he wanted to perform on the Opry he replied, quote, "Are you kidding me? To be invited where so many of the greatest country artists have performed is an honor and I still can't believe it." "Don't Think I Don't Think About It" will be on Rucker's upcoming country album, which is expected to be released in the fall.
With summer officially underway, consumers are beginning to think twice about their July 4th plans. According to the National Retail Federation’s 2008 Independence Day survey, 59.4% of consumers say increased gas prices will impact their spending for the holiday, up from 42.1% last year. Other survey findings:
What we plan to do on July 4th:
- Cookout/Barbecue/Picnic (61.2%) - Travel/vacation (11.2%)
- Fireworks/Community celebration (40.2%) - Other (11.2%)
- Attending a parade (10.5%) - Will not celebrate (13.5%)
Patriotic merchandise we already own:
- American flag (61.0%) - Bumper sticker or car decal (14.3%)
- Apparel (T-shirt, hat, etc.) (43.3%) - Other (5.2%)
- Decorations (28.4%) - Do not own patriotic merchandise (20.9%)
- Music (21.9%)
16% of consumers said they would purchase additional patriotic merchandise this month, compared
to 17.3% who said they would last year.
AAA estimates a decline in the number of Americans traveling during the Fourth of July holiday travel period. However, 40.45 million Americans will still travel during the July 4th holiday weekend, down 1.3%, or nearly 550,000 Americans from last year. Other findings:
· More than 13% of the U.S. population will be on the road this holiday weekend despite record gas prices.
· More than 34.2 million Americans (almost 85% of all holiday travelers) intend to travel by
automobile.
· Approximately 4.54 million Americans (11% of holiday travelers) expect to travel by airplane.
· Nearly 1.7 million plan to travel by train, bus or other mode of transportation.
· Automobile travelers across much of the country will have to contend with gas prices at or above
$4 a gallon. The national average for self-serve regular is $4.07 a gallon. That’s 13 cents a
gallon more than last month and $1.09 a gallon more than a year ago.
For most Americans, the Fourth of July celebration is a time for food, fun and fireworks. But in 2007 nearly 10,000 Americans were treated in emergency rooms for firework-related injuries. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, 64% of these injuries occurred during the one month period surrounding the July 4th holiday. A review of these injuries shows that burns were the most common, accounting for more than half of the incidents. The parts of the body most often injured were hands (2,000 injuries), eyes (1,400 injuries) and legs (1,200 injuries). To reduce injuries, CPSC recommends these fireworks safety tips:
· Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
· Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.
· Avoid buying fireworks that come in brown paper packaging, as this can be a sign that the
fireworks were made for professional displays and could pose a danger to consumers.
· Adults should always supervise fireworks activities. Parents often don’t realize that there are
many injuries from sparklers to children under five. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.
· Um, never have any portion of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Move back a safe distance immediately after lighting.
· Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not fully detonated.
· Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
· Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire.
· Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
As Independence Day approaches, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives wants to remind the public to exercise caution when dealing with fireworks and only purchase legal fireworks through licensed retailers. Illegal explosive devices meet neither the safety nor quality standards of legally-manufactured consumer fireworks. Federally banned fireworks include M-80s, M-1000s, Silver Salutes and Cherry Bombs. Mail-order kits designed to build these fireworks also are banned. The manufacture, sale, and receipt of these illegal explosives can result in federal felony and misdemeanor charges. The public is urged to report the manufacture or sale of illegal fireworks or explosive devices to local law enforcement or to ATF by calling 1-888-ATF-BOMB (1-888-283-2662). Celebrating our nation’s independence is a time-honored tradition, typically marked by barbeques, fireworks and a cold beer. Last year, July 4th was the biggest beer-selling holiday of the year, with beer sales at supermarkets across the country topping 23 million cases during the holiday period, according to The Nielsen Company. Beer sales during this period also accounted for approximately 5.2% of total annual beer sales in 2007. Rising sales of beer are contributing to the U.S. economy – nearly $190 billion, in fact. According to a study by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association, the beer industry also contributes more than 1.7 million jobs paying almost $55 billion in wages annually. The production of beer helps support other segments of the economy as well, including more than $4 billion in economic contributions for the agricultural sector.
The office of Britain’s Prince Charles says the royal has converted his 1970 Aston Martin – a 21st birthday present from his mother – to run on surplus wine-based bio-fuel to help reduce carbon emissions. The office said Charles has converted several vehicles, including an Audi and several Jaguars, to run on 100% biodiesel fuel derived from cooking oil.
A convenience store in Norwalk, California, became a drive-in when a 74-year-old woman plowed her car through the front window and then tried to buy a six-pack of beer. Police say Lynne Rice drove her 1988 Cadillac into Joe’s Food Mart and Video on Sunday evening. The car plowed about halfway through the store, but nobody was injured. Rice got out of the car, walked over to the cooler and pulled out a six-pack of Budweiser. A cashier declined the sale and called police. Rice was taken to a hospital for examination because she had a pre-existing medical condition. She was also arrested for investigation of DUI and released on $15,000 bail. The crash destroyed two 6-foot-wide glass panels. Damage was put at about $8,000.
Tom Mault found a rare 1963 red Sting-Ray leaning in a corner at a Virginia Beach bike shop. It’s one of the first made, with the distinctive “banana seat.” Mault paid $350 for the Sting-Ray – and now he’s getting offers of up to $100,000 for the bike. But the Virginia contractor says his Schwinn isn’t for sale. Mault started collecting bikes because as a kid his parents couldn’t afford to buy him one.
Big & Rich will perform at the groundbreaking of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Foundation’s Memorial next week. Christie Brinkley’s divorce from her fourth husband, Peter Cook, begins today on Long Island. In a rare twist, the divorce trial will be open to the public. Brinkley opposed a move by a legal guardian for her children that would have closed the proceedings to the public, apparently feeling comfortable with the prospect that Cook’s alleged affair with an 18-year-old employee and other intimate details of their 10-year marriage will be ripe for public consumption. The couple had a prenup, so money will not be the focus of the trial. The children and belongings are another story.
The Lenval hospital in Nice, France, said Tuesday that Angelina Jolie had checked in at its Santa
Maria maternity clinic in preparation for giving birth to twins. Jolie has said her babies are due in August, but twins are often born early. A hospital spokesman said it is unlikely she will be released until after the delivery.
Perth, the Australian hometown of late actor Heath Ledger, named a theater in his honor Tuesday for his commitment to acting. The $87 million, 575-seat Heath Ledger Theater is a fitting tribute because Ledger was always supportive of other young actors, Western Australia State Premier Alan Carpenter said at a naming ceremony. Ledger died at 28 of an accidental prescription drug overdose in New York in January. Ledger received a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for his role in 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain.” His last film, “The Dark Knight” opens July 18th.
New York City officials are shocked after seeing surveillance video showing a woman falling from her chair, writhing on the floor and dying as workers failed to help her for more than an hour. Esmin Green, 49, had been waiting in the emergency room for nearly 24 hours when she fell out of her chair at 5:32 a.m. on June 19th, falling face down. She was dead by 6:35, when someone on the medical staff flagged down by a person in the waiting room, finally approached, nudged Green with her foot, and gently prodded her shoulder. The staffer then left and returned with someone wearing a white lab coat who examined her and summoned help. Other patients, security guards and hospital staff just cruised on by as if nothing was going on. One guard didn’t even leave his chair, rolling it around a corner to stare at the body, then rolling away a few moments later. The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, which runs the hospital, said six people have been fired. Even more pathetic is the fact that Green’s medical records raised the possibility that someone might have tried to cover up the circumstances of the death. They contained notations indicating that she was up and about during the time in which the video shows her dying on the floor. The psychiatric unit at Kings Conty Hospital had already been a target of complaints by advocates for the mentally ill. No word on what caused Green’s death.
After refreshing its company slogan last year, Wal-Mart is revamping its U.S. store logo. Wal-Mart said on its W b site that the logo change was “part of an ongoing evolution of its overall brand.” The logo it used from 1992 until 2008 features Wal-Mart spelled in capital letters, with a star between the “Wal” and “Mart.” The new logo drops the star, and instead features a yellow sunburst after the word “Walmart.” Last year, Wal-Mart introduced an ad campaign with the slogan “Save Money. Live Better,” replacing “Always low prices” after 19 years. The retailer has used numerous logos in its 46- year history, starting in 1962 with the word “Walmart” present in just about any font/style available to the printer.
Will Smith's superhero send-up Hancock opens today. He tells us how he prepared for the unsavory part. "I watched W-C Fields. W-C Fields was really sharp with being funny and being rude. He was great with kids. I watched 'Archie Bunker.' Tommy Lee Jones is genius at being able to be funny while saying things that are rude or harsh or inappropriate."
Arizona authorities got quite a surprise when responding to a call Monday night. Mesa Police officers say someone heard a man and a woman arguing in an apartment, and items being thrown. But when cops arrived, they say they found a man arguing with himself, changing the pitch of his voice as he acted out each part. They say he was also breaking windows and other items. It was determined the man was a danger to himself, and he was eventually taken into custody by SWAT team members.
Girls of today believe the sky is the limit, but they're also feeling the pressure. That's according to a new survey, of girls ages 13 to 24, conducted by Nickelodeon's The N channel. Seventy-two-percent of respondents said there has never been a better time to be a female and 86-percent said they owe their opportunities to prior generations of women. Four-out-of-ten girls polled believe that they will make more money than their spouse. However, 43-percent of girls described themselves as stressed out, as opposed to 19-percent of guys. Seventy-five-percent of the young ladies say they feel stressed out about everything they do, including anxiety over school, the future, money, homework and their appearance.
