Happy Hump Day! 7/9/08

Thanks for joining me this morning for another Hump Day! Here's what happened today on Wheelz 100.5!

Las Vegas police say a man bared all when he stole some beer from a convenience store and tried to escape on a bus. KTNV-TV says it happened just before 8:30 Tuesday morning. The unclothed man stole the beer from a 7-Eleven store and darted into traffic. He tried to get into a public paratransit bus parked behind the store. Police say the naked man ended up hanging onto the bus as it drove away, then broke a window and beat the bus driver, throwing him off the bus. The naked suspect then took the wheel. Soon afterwards, he jumped out, and the bus rolled down the street. A Metro officer managed to get into the bus and stop it, while the naked man was arrested by other cops a short distance away. No one was hurt, but the bare-bottomed suspect faces a psychological evaluation, along with a number of charges.

Fewer and fewer men are wearing neckties to work these days. A recent Gallup Survey has found that the amount of men who still do has fallen to a record-low of six-percent. It's a far cry from the days when not just men with an office jobs wore neckties, but also milkmen, gas-station attendants, bicycle messengers, among others. Sales of ties are said to have peaked in the 1980s, after then-President Ronald Reagan popularized the red power tie, which business executives and other American men soon picked up on.

Owners of an Ohio gas station think they have a temporary solution to high gas prices. Every Tuesday from 2 to 9 p.m., the Shell station in Lorain, a town west of Cleveland, sells gasoline at its wholesale price. Tony and Frank Salti say the price can be anywhere from ten-to-30-cents-per-gallon cheaper than usual. Their "Crazy Tuesday" promotion has drawn drivers from all over the county, including some people who fueled up boats and lawn mowers at the discounted price.

A Nevada brothel is trying to stimulate business by offering free gas. Clients of the Shady Lady Ranch will get a 50-dollar gas voucher if they fork out 300 dollars -- worth about one hour's worth of services -- at the brothel in Beatty, Nevada. Owner James Davis said he already has had to order another thousand-dollar set of gas vouchers because the first thousand-dollars-worth were spent in one week. Davis, who is co-owner of the brothel with his wife Bobbi, says, "It's rocking along. We're doing quite well. June and July historically are not big months." The 50-dollar rebate would roughly cover the cost of a round trip drive from Las Vegas to the ranch.

Kathy Mattea will join the 2008 Santa Train on November 22nd. The train makes a special journey each year, with 14 stops in Kentucky, Virginia, and Tennessee to distribute 15-tons of toys and gifts to people along the route. This year will mark the Santa Train's 66th trip through the region.

Kenny Rogers will play at The Venue at Horseshoe Casino in Chicago this fall. The casino will open on August 8th with a performance by Bette Midler. Lynyrd Skynyrd is slated to appear at The Venue on August 15th. Rogers' show is set for October 4th, with tickets going on sale July 18th.

Darryl Worley has announced the lineup for his annual concert benefiting the Darryl Worley Foundation. The show, which takes place in Jackson, Tennessee on Tuesday, will feature Jamey Johnson, Jim "Moose" Brown and Darryl's long-time collaborator Wynn Varble. The Darryl Worley Foundation raises money for various programs in his hometown of Savannah, Tennessee and the surrounding area.

Sugarland mixed business with business when they shot the video for "All I Want to Do" in Hawaii -- where they happened to be performing. Jennifer Nettles tells us, "Not bad, right? It was not hard working. We're learning in this job -- we're learning that if you've got to work, do it in a great place." Sugarland leaves sunny beaches behind this week for a Canadian run that starts tomorrow night in Merritt, British Columbia.

Brooks and Dunn's Kix Brooks can cross running with the bulls at Pamplona off his bucket list. He called into a Nashville radio station from Spain and revealed that he did indeed participate in the annual tradition yesterday and survived without injury. Kix said that even though the human runners get a pretty good head start, the bulls catch up quickly. He added that he'd trained for the running of the bulls the week before while vacationing in Italy -- mostly by eating way too much.

For Alan Jackson, after almost two decades of making records, the music business has become somewhat routine. He says the thing keeping his creative juices flowing is writing music. He tells us, "When you write a song and it ends up on a record or on the radio and it touches people, it's a great feeling and I think that helps me keep interested in the business."

Google unveiled a free service yesterday in which three-dimensional software enables people to meet in electronic rooms. The service, called “Lively,” is Google’s answer to Second Life, where people deploy animated alter egos known as avatars to navigate through virtual reality. The Lively application already works on Facebook and Google is working on a version for MySpace. Users will be able to sculpt an avatar that can be male, female or even a different species. An avatar can assume a new identity, change clothes or convey emotions with a few clicks of the mouse. The service also enables users to create different digital dimensions to roam, from a coffeehouse to an exotic island. Find out more at www.lively.com.

Watching too much TV is bad for your brain and your body, but Canadian researchers have
discovered that the TV can also lead to an increase in food consumption. The University of Toronto found that kids who watched TV while eating lunch took in 228 extra calories than those who ate without the TV on. The bottom line, turn off the toob when you turn on your appetite.

Michael J. Fox is in talks to return to TV as a regular on the hit firefighter drama “Rescue Me.” Fox, who suffers from Parkinson’s Disease, is slated to play Denis Leary’s love rival on the show. If negotiations go as planned, Fox will appear in several episodes of the show’s upcoming fifth season.

Toby Keith is expected to release a new album this fall, and his newest single, “She Never Cried in Front of Me,” was made available for sale as a digital download yesterday. Keith’s second feature film, “Beer for My Horses,” arrives in theaters on August 8th while the soundtrack will be out August 5th. Toby released a two-disc compilation, “35 Biggest Hits,” in May. He is currently on an extensive tour with Montgomery Gentry through September.

Patty Loveless will release “Sleepless Nights,” an album of 14 country classics, on September 9th. Selections include “Why Baby Why,” “He Thinks I Still Care,” “Crazy Arms,” “Don’t Let Me Cross Over,” “Please Help Me I’m Falling,” and “Cold, Cold Heart.”

George Jones University All Set For Fall George Jones University will take students through an intense two-day crash course about everything a Nashville newbie should know going into the Country Music industry. The September 25th seminar will feature some of the industry’s most successful movers and shakers. Students will also receive a list of “Who’s Who in the Music Business,” which provides names, positions and contact information in the industry.

Garth Brooks will help cut the ribbon at the opening ceremony for a new arena in Tulsa, Oklahoma. But, since Garth is technically “retired,” he won’t be giving the arena’s first performance. Brooks told reporters that the mayor and arena officials did everything “humanly possible” to try to convince him to be the opening act. The first show at the BOK Center will be August 30th. After the opening ceremony, the general public can tour the $178 million, 18,000-seat arena.

A 19-year-old woman working at an English hotel discovered a baby bat in her bra. The real surprise is that she had been wearing the bra for five hours. Hotel receptionist Abbie Hawkins initially thought her cell phone was going off when she felt vibrations in her clothes while working at the Holiday Inn Norwich North. But when she reached to grab her phone, she found a tiny bat hiding in the padded pocket of her bra.

Sheriff Mike Blakely is looking for the owners of a goat and little dog who were involved in a strange incident on U.S. 72 in Limestone County, Alabama. A woman driving a Mercedes saw the goat and dog playing in the road. She stopped because she was afraid the animals would get hit. But the goat jumped on the car and refused to come down. The woman called police and a deputy managed to get the goat into his cruiser; the dog jumped in too. A deputy is caring for the wayward goat while a veterinarian is looking after the dog.
