When Collier County, Florida sheriff's deputies arrested a 19-year-old man on trespassing charges at Wal-Mart on Monday, and then found a stolen debit card in his pants pocket, but the teen had a perfectly good excuse. They weren't his pants. The teen, Richard W. Obdyke, told deputies he found the pants in his van, and did not know who they belonged to. When asked who may have left the pants in his van, Obdyke couldn't think of anyone. So, as credible as his excuse was, deputies chose to check it out. Deputies located the owner of the debit card, Deborah Cahill, who said someone had charged 32-dollars-and-80-cents at McDonalds, 42-dollars-and-two-cents at a Shell gas station, and 85-dollars at a Seven-Eleven to her account. She said she didn't know where her debit card was, and thought she may have left it at Marsala Pizza over the weekend. Surprise, surprise, deputies determined that Obdyke was an employee of Marsala Pizza.

Operators of the Chicago area’s Metra commuter trains are reducing the number of bathrooms to make room for more seats. Metra officials said they decided to scale back on restrooms after experiencing a third consecutive year of record ridership while at the same time failing to find money in the budget to buy more trains. Officials said every other passenger car should have a bathroom after the changes are implemented. Fewer bathrooms and more seats will generate $7.5 million and save about $2 million annually in maintenance and cleaning costs.

A disposable diaper is responsible for saving the life of an 18-month-old boy, breaking his fall from a third-floor apartment window in a Brazilian city. The boy dangled from the spike for a moment before the diaper “opened and the baby fell to the ground, but at a much slower speed,” an officer said.
It was the baggy pants that led to the downfall of a suspect in Atlanta, Georgia. Police say they chased Emanuel Uzowihe on foot earlier this week outside of the Fulton County Courthouse. Those in the area who saw the incident say Uzowihe was carrying a long black gun with him and pointed it at officers after the chase. He was shot twice and wounded by an officer. Since then, only Jeffers and one other person have reported seeing the thief – a small beagle. Acting town marshal Rob Kiger said he also spotted the beagle, which is believed to be a stray, carrying a tennis shoe in his mouth and a pair of women’s underwear on his head. Officials said the dog, who takes only one shoe at a time and never leaves any bite marks, has proven difficult to capture.

Happy Hump Day 8/27/08
One of America’s most beloved foods is under attack. A new TV commercial shows kids eating hot dogs in a school cafeteria and one boy commenting: “I was dumbfounded when the doctor told me I have late-stage colon cancer.” The boy doesn’t have colon cancer, but the pro-vegetarian sponsor of the spot say it is a dramatization that highlights research linking processed meats – including hot dogs – with higher odds of getting colon cancer. The health concerns primarily come from the high fat and salt content and sodium nitrate and nitrite in hot dogs. Health experts say that while hot dogs aren’t exactly health food, eating one occasionally probably won’t kill you. The National Hot Dog & Sausage Council says U.S. consumers spent more than $4 billion on hot dogs and sausages last year. That includes more than 1.5 billion pounds of hot dogs and sausages purchased at retail stores alone.

Actor Johnny Depp has reportedly been approached to play The Riddler in the flick. The latest "Batman" movie, "The Dark Knight," is now in theatres and has already earned more than 870-million-dollars at box offices worldwide.
A computer glitch in the system for filing flight plans caused huge delays in air traffic yesterday. The Department of Homeland Security said there was no link to terrorism and the FAA said the glitch did not affect its ability to track planes in the air. Flights from Dallas and Chicago to the East Coast were delayed. The problem began at 1:25 p.m. (GMT) when a communications link failed in the system that processes flight plans at a facility south of Atlanta. The only other flight plan facility, in Salt Lake City, took on the extra load… You would think with all the extra charges they could be on time!

A tree in Alabama was saved from being cut down a year ago to make way for power lines has been uprooted. A woman took on the cause last year by chaining herself to the 75-year-old pecan tree in the town of Jacksonville to prevent Alabama Power from cutting it down. The case landed in a court and she was handed a victory with the utility deciding not to fight it. However, a storm rolled through the area Monday night, knocked the tree over and laid it to rest on Wilson's front porch. Wilson got lucky when some of its limbs got caught in power lines and kept the full weight of the tree from crashing into her house.
Running, riding and swimming is no way to escape police and a man in south Minneapolis found that out the hard way. Authorities picked his trail up again a short time later and he took off running. He then jumped into a lake and swam to an anchored boat. Charges have been dropped against a grandmother who registered her Australian shepherd-terrier mix to vote. Jane Balogh, of Federal Way, Washington, reached a plea agreement last year that required her to perform 10 hours of community service at the Tacoma Rescue Mission and to pay $240 in court costs. On Monday, a judge dismissed charges of making a false or misleading statement to a public servant. Balogh said she registered her dog under the name Duncan M. Donald to demonstrate how easy voter fraud has become. She used a utility bill in the dog’s name as identification for voter registration and to obtain an absentee ballot. A 15-pound, 8-month-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners’ backyard in Wyckoff, New Jersey. “We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off,” owner Fran Osiason said. Osiason said the pup’s barking drove the two cubs up a tree before they eventually climbed down, hopped over a fence and retreated into the woods.
Nine-year-old Jericho Scott can throw a baseball almost 40 mph, pretty impressive for a kid and apparently too impressive for the Youth Baseball League of New Haven in Connecticut. The League told Jericho he can no longer pitch on the league, but he took the mound last week anyway. The opposing team saw Jericho ready to play and forfeited the game. Officials said they plan on disbanding Jericho’s team and will put the players on other teams in the league. Coach Wilfred Vidro said, “How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

Federal bankruptcy Judge Paul Bonapfel reported a break-in last week at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in downtown Atlanta. The intruder made no effort to cover his tracks while ransacking the 14-floor office. The thief is also responsible for stealing chocolate chip cookies, a packet of dried soup and a sandwich. A close examination of the evidence discovered a raccoon was to blame. A court clerk created a “wanted” poster and other members of Bonapfel’s staff posted a “raccoon crossing” sign on the judge’s door. Workers from a company that specializes in catching wildlife placed a trap in the ceiling over the judge’s office and baited it with tuna. The wait ended yesterday when a judicial assistant heard a noise overhead. Two workers removed the ceiling tiles
and nabbed the suspect.

Fred Crane, who played one of the young suitors of Scarlett O’Hara in the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind,” died Thursday of complications from diabetes. He was 90. Crane played one of the Tarleton twins in the movie. The other Tarleton twin was played by George Reeves, who later gained TV immortality as Superman. The film opens with Crane’s character asking O’Hara, “What do we care if we were expelled from college, Scarlett? The war is going to start any day now, so we’d have left college anyhow.” Crane was said to be the oldest surviving adult male cast member of the classic
movie.
Researchers who studied satellite photos of thousands of cows around the world have discovered the animals seem to have a built-in compass, knowing how to find north and south. Most cattle that were grazing or resting tended to align their bodies in a north-south direction, according to a team of German and Czech researchers. The finding held true regardless of what continent the cows were on. A look at 8,510 cows in 308 pastures found 60 to 70% were oriented north-south. Researchers also discovered that in very windy conditions cattle tend to face the wind, and have been known to seek out the sun on cold days.Just an added note if you want to know if it is going to rain just look in the field and if you see most of them lying down then that’s a sure sign.
The world’s first full-scale nuclear reactor is now a National Historic Landmark. The Hanford nuclear reservation’s B Reactor in Washington produced plutonium for the first man-made atomic blast, the Trinity test in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, and for the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. Hanford and B Reactor were the centerpiece of the Manhattan Project. Construction began on June 7, 1943, six months after physicist Enrico Fermi turned the theory of nuclear power into the reality of the atomic age. The B Reactor was shut down in 1968. About 2,000 people have visited the complex this year.

Publishers Clearing House is alerting consumers about fraudulent mailings being sent to consumers that claim to be from PCH, Oprah Winfrey and O Magazine. The mailings include what appears to be a real check. However, the check is bogus. The fake checks often look so real that even bank tellers may be fooled. Consumers are told they are being given an advance on a sweepstakes they have won or are being paid the first installment on millions they would receive after wiring a portion back to the scammer. If consumers believe they are the victim of this scam they should contact their local law enforcement or consumer protection office. (Stations, contact Chris Irving, PCH Consumer Affairs, at 516-944-4918 to schedule an interview.)
Following the death of its mayor, the small northern Kentucky town of Rabbit Hash is preparing to elect a new leader. The only candidate so far is a border collie named Lucy Lou. That’s 2 million more than the 1996 Atlanta Games, the previous all-time record-holder. NBC Universal devoted 3,600 hours of Olympic coverage. In Beijing, the final day of the Games drew nearly all of China’s 1.3 billion people to their televisions, making it “likely to be the most widely watched Games in Olympic history,” according to International Olympic Committee president Jacques Rogge. NBC paid $894 million for the exclusive U.S. broadcast rights, from which it says it has earned more than $1 billion in advertising revenue.
Truck discrimination!
A Texas homeowners association says a nearly new Ford truck isn’t good enough to be left out in a driveway overnight. Owner Jim Greenwood has gotten three notices telling him to get the truck out of the driveway or face a $50 per event fine. The homeowners association of Stonebriar Village in Frisco, Texas, does, however, allow more prestigious brand trucks – such as Lincolns – to be parked in driveways. Greenwood claims a board member told him that “Lincoln markets to a different class of people.” Greenwood said he paid nearly $30,000 for the Ford.

Tracy does feel that some of the new songs have mainstream potential.

Alan Jackson's passion for all things automotive is well-known. Before he moved to Nashville, he owned more than three hundred cars, boats, motorcycles and trucks -- not all at the same time. Alan says, "Sometimes I'd go out and buy a car and sometimes I'd have it sold by five o'clock that afternoon." Though he's had his share of fancy rides over the years, these days he prefers to drives the kind of vehicles he had when he lived in Georgia before he was a star -- mostly trucks and occasionally a vintage car.
The title cut of Taylor Swift's upcoming Fearless C-D is sparking an Internet phenomenon. U-S-A Today reports that, after audio from a video of Taylor performing the song shot by a radio station last year found its way online (it's since been removed), scores of teenage girls have posted home-made videos of the song on You Tube. The clips technically infringe the song's copyright, but Taylor's label doesn't want to discourage fans from getting into the music. Taylor says, "If you know that somebody's passionate enough about a song to want to sing it, that's a really good indicator that it's going to do well." Fearless is set for release in November.

John Pala nearly lost his life when he was attacked by a bear in the Great Smoky Mountains earlier this week -- but he wasn't about to lose his shirt. The Tennessee man had one request to make of park rangers who managed to shoot and kill the critter -- he wanted them to retrieve his Lynyrd Skynyrd T-shirt from its stomach when they dismembered it for disposal. Pala got his wish -- and, we can only hope, a chorus or two of "Gimme Back My Bullets" for good measure.

The mother said they named the child Taylor Winterpark Short, with her middle name being a tribute to the town of her birth.

When deputies arrived, Plop-Plop “went kind of crazy,” said Sheriff’s deputy Randolph Grob. Officers didn’t want the bird to hurt itself, or them, so they used a stun gun to immobilize the emu. The bird was brought to the Animal Control Center, where she has made a full recovery.
