A Texas school district will let teachers bring guns to class this fall in what experts said appeared to be a first in the United States. The board of the small rural Harrold Independent School District unanimously approved the plan and parents have not objected, said the district's superintendent, David Thweatt. School experts backed Thweatt's claim that Harrold, a system of about 110 students 150 miles northwest of Fort Worth, may be the first to let teachers bring guns to the classroom. Thweatt claims it is a matter of safety, saying, "We have a lock-down situation, we have cameras, but the question we had to answer is, 'What if somebody gets in? What are we going to do? It's just common sense." Teachers who wish to bring guns will have to be certified to carry a concealed handgun in Texas and get crisis training and permission from school officials.

A Texas man can tell you how hard it is to make a getaway when you don't have access to your ride. According to the "Midland Reporter-Telegram," 24-year-old John Wilkinson was arrested last week for allegedly robbing a local drug store. To make matters worse, cops shot Wilkinson when they found him because of the gun-like item. It turned out to be a caulking gun wrapped in black cloth. Wilkinson was treated and released for the gunshot wound, but was immediately arrested on a charge of armed robbery.

A Texas man believes police are to blame for the death of his girlfriend's poodle. The "San Antonio Express-News" reports that Michael Gonzalez was with his girlfriend when they were pulled over while rushing the dog to a veterinarian and officers made them wait about 20 minutes. He was eventually issued a ticket but he says officers should have assisted him in getting help for the dog. The poodle died before the traffic stop was over and Gonzalez is suing the San Marcos Police Department. The department carried out an internal investigation and counseled the officer afterward, while the ticket Gonzalez was issued was dismissed.

Several Connecticut drivers are dealing with a different gas crisis. The owner of the Putnam Fuel Depot knew something was wrong when cars leaving his station began conking out shortly after filling up. The station's distributor delivered 85-hundred gallons of diesel fuel instead of regular unleaded. More than three dozen cars had to be towed for repairs that could run between 500-and-one-thousand-dollars. The station is also losing money as a result of the foul up. The irony is the station owner says they don't even sell diesel. Car owners will have to foot the bill until the station's insurance company sorts out the claims.
