A 15-pound, 8-month-old cocker spaniel-poodle mix named Pawlee scared off a mother bear and her two cubs Sunday morning after they strayed into his owners’ backyard in Wyckoff, New Jersey. “We had just let him out for the morning and he ran into the yard and started barking his head off,” owner Fran Osiason said. Osiason said the pup’s barking drove the two cubs up a tree before they eventually climbed down, hopped over a fence and retreated into the woods.

Nine-year-old Jericho Scott can throw a baseball almost 40 mph, pretty impressive for a kid and apparently too impressive for the Youth Baseball League of New Haven in Connecticut. The League told Jericho he can no longer pitch on the league, but he took the mound last week anyway. The opposing team saw Jericho ready to play and forfeited the game. Officials said they plan on disbanding Jericho’s team and will put the players on other teams in the league. Coach Wilfred Vidro said, “How can you punish a kid for being too good?”

Federal bankruptcy Judge Paul Bonapfel reported a break-in last week at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building in downtown Atlanta. The intruder made no effort to cover his tracks while ransacking the 14-floor office. The thief is also responsible for stealing chocolate chip cookies, a packet of dried soup and a sandwich. A close examination of the evidence discovered a raccoon was to blame. A court clerk created a “wanted” poster and other members of Bonapfel’s staff posted a “raccoon crossing” sign on the judge’s door. Workers from a company that specializes in catching wildlife placed a trap in the ceiling over the judge’s office and baited it with tuna. The wait ended yesterday when a judicial assistant heard a noise overhead. Two workers removed the ceiling tiles
and nabbed the suspect.

Dr. Robert Puff, clinical psychologist and author of “Anger Work: How To Express Your Anger and Still Be Kind,” says, “With the current mortgage crisis, many couples are experiencing an enormous strain on their relationship caused by losing their homes. A Jersey City, New Jersey man told police he walked nearly half a mile before noticing he was shot in the knee early yesterday morning, according to police. The 34-year-old Kennedy Boulevard resident said he was near the Montgomery Gardens public housing complex around 4:20 a-m when he felt "minor pain" in his left knee, police said. It wasn't until he reached Bergen Avenue and Montgomery Street that his knee pain worsened and he noticed he was bleeding, police said. The man appeared intoxicated and he was listed in stable condition at Jersey City Medical Center, with the bullet possibly still lodged in his knee.

Fred Crane, who played one of the young suitors of Scarlett O’Hara in the 1939 classic “Gone With the Wind,” died Thursday of complications from diabetes. He was 90. Crane played one of the Tarleton twins in the movie. The other Tarleton twin was played by George Reeves, who later gained TV immortality as Superman. The film opens with Crane’s character asking O’Hara, “What do we care if we were expelled from college, Scarlett? The war is going to start any day now, so we’d have left college anyhow.” Crane was said to be the oldest surviving adult male cast member of the classic
movie.

Researchers who studied satellite photos of thousands of cows around the world have discovered the animals seem to have a built-in compass, knowing how to find north and south. Most cattle that were grazing or resting tended to align their bodies in a north-south direction, according to a team of German and Czech researchers. The finding held true regardless of what continent the cows were on. A look at 8,510 cows in 308 pastures found 60 to 70% were oriented north-south. Researchers also discovered that in very windy conditions cattle tend to face the wind, and have been known to seek out the sun on cold days.Just an added note if you want to know if it is going to rain just look in the field and if you see most of them lying down then that’s a sure sign.

The world’s first full-scale nuclear reactor is now a National Historic Landmark. The Hanford nuclear reservation’s B Reactor in Washington produced plutonium for the first man-made atomic blast, the Trinity test in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, and for the bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki, Japan, on August 9, 1945. Hanford and B Reactor were the centerpiece of the Manhattan Project. Construction began on June 7, 1943, six months after physicist Enrico Fermi turned the theory of nuclear power into the reality of the atomic age. The B Reactor was shut down in 1968. About 2,000 people have visited the complex this year.

After that, Toby plans on taking it easy until he goes on his U-S-O tour in May.
Craig Morgan is known for his visual songs, and there's a reason for that. The singer says he chooses songs that not only tell a story but with their lyrics engage all the senses. Morgan is using that philosophy while working on the first album for his new label, BNA. Craig's first single, "Love Remembers," is from the upcoming CD, due to be released later this year.

Trisha Yearwood had a close call in the sky last week. On her way home from a three-day, 60-mile walk to benefit the Susan G. Komen breast cancer research fund, her plane had to make an emergency landing because of a crack in the front left window. She tells People-dot-com, "We had been in the air for almost an hour when we heard a loud pop. The flight attendant came back and told us to remain calm. That's when we saw the two pilots with the oxygen masks on. Hearing them breathe like Darth Vader made it a little harder to stay calm." The plane made an emergency landing in Baltimore.
