A flooded bathroom is to blame for tens of thousands of customers in Pennsylvania losing their phone service. It happened in Harrisburg, Susquehanna Township and northern Dauphin County on Friday at a Verizon switching station. The flood took place on the building's fifth floor and took the system down for seven hours. Regular service was down but so was 911 but there were luckily no emergencies reported during the time. It was back up and running for the 40-thousand customers by eleven Friday night.

A meteorologist broadcasting from the Iowa State Fair got a real surprise when a friendly snake slithered up his pants. Kurtis Gertz, a meteorologist with KCCI-TV in Des Moines, was performing the live broadcast last Thursday alongside a python trainer who allowed Gertz to wear a giant Burmese python on his shoulders. The snake got a little friendlier with Gertz than he would have liked. He didn’t realize the snake had slithered up one of his pants legs until bystanders began gasping and pointing.

A man is back behind bars after a police chase in which he was allegedly speaking to authorities on the phone and telling them he couldn't talk because he was on the run. Grayson Clevenger is accused of leading officers on a chase through Minnesota to Wisconsin and back while answering a call from them on his cell by saying, "dude, I can't talk. I'm being chased by police." He was wanted on burglary charges when the ordeal unfolded in July but managed to slip away. He was finally nabbed this last weekend by Minnetonka police after another chase.


A Michigan man is praising his wife for being understanding when he walked into the house late at night with a naked college woman. The "Saginaw News" reports 65-year-old Ernest Kramer went outside at 11:00 p.m. last week to turn off some lights when he heard a female voice asking for help. The 19-year-old woman asked to use Kramer's phone because she claimed to be lost. According to Kramer, in the darkness he couldn't tell that the woman was nude. When he finally noticed her nakedness on his porch, Kramer then took off his shirt and put it on her. He added, quote, "My wife never batted an eye when I walked in the house without a shirt on -- and with a drunk girl wearing my shirt." Deputies later were able to get the woman home. They also returned Kramer's shirt after the woman was "fully dressed."


A 104-year-old diehard Chicago Cubs fan is lobbying the team to allow him to throw out the first pitch at a game during their expected playoff run. Leo Hildebrand, who lives in the Chicago suburb of Bensenville, said he tried to get a slot throwing out the first pitch during last year’s season, but he was told all slots had been filled. Now he’s focusing on the upcoming playoffs for his first trip to the pitcher’s mound. “He can’t wait much longer,” said Hildebrand’s daughter, Arlene Burm.

High school cheerleading is the most dangerous sport for girls, according to a new report. Cheerleading accounted for 65.1% of all catastrophic sports injuries among high school females over the past 25 years. The National Center for Catastrophic Sports Injury Research said the new estimate is up from 55% in last year’s study. The six most common cheerleading injuries:
1. Strains/sprains (52.4%) 4. Lacerations/avulsions (3.8%)
2. Soft tissue injuries (18.4%) 5. Concussions/closed head injuries (3.5%)
3. Fractures/dislocations (16.4%) 6. Other (5.5%)

The National Eye Institute said yesterday that half of all Americans have some sort of vision problem. The Institute analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey on 12,000 people aged 20 and older between 1999 and 2004. More than 33% were nearsighted and 36% has astigmatism. Another 3.6% were farsighted.


A Chicago police officer has been suspended for 15 months for demanding free coffee and baked goods from six different Starbucks. Officer Barbara Nevers, a 14-year veteran, has also been ordered to undergo counseling. The Police Board ruled that Nevers intimidated Starbucks employees by screaming at them and flashing her badge, handcuffs or gun when they wanted her to pay. Nevers’ attorney says her client never used her job to demand free coffee.

Doggyspace.com is the canine equivalent to Facebook or MySpace, with owners of pooches setting up pages for their dogs. The Virginia-based site is part of a growing trend of niche social networking sites that target groups looking to connect with like-minded people. www.doggyspace.com


Author and speaker Dave Farrow has done more than 1,000 radio and T.V. interviews. Farrow is the current Guinness World Record Holder for Greatest Memory. He memorized the exact order of 59 decks of cards. That’s 3,068 cards all shuffled together in random order. He is recognized as the world’s foremost expert on memory training.



Japan's Yokohama Ice Cream Expo attracted thousands of fans before it closed Sunday, according to organizer Manabu Matsumoto, who identified beef tongue ice cream as the most popular variety. Mastumoto says, "We have ice cream from all over Japan, but beef tongue has been the one that people keep coming back for." More than 125 varieties of ice cream were available in the two-week festival, including cheese, beer, octopus, prawn and a garlic variety called Dracula Premium Ice. Another favorite was flavored with very finely sliced pieces of pearl from the traditional pearl-growing region of Japan's inland sea.



Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman took a little breather from parenting to enjoy a soccer match this past weekend in Sydney, Australia. The New York Daily News reports the couple stepped out wearing practically identical outfits -- black leather jackets, black shirts, dark jeans, ball caps and sunglasses.


Applebee's is investigating a report of a dead but intact four-inch-long lizard found in a customer's salad during lunch at the Applebee's Neighborhood Grill and Bar in Bloomington, Indiana. Bree Davis of the McLean County Health Department said a health department sanitarian went to Applebee's after receiving a complaint from the customer. She said the department's sanitarian did not see the lizard because it had been discarded by Applebee's staff. But management confirmed it did happen. Employees showed how they wash the lettuce, cut it, and then wash it again. They couldn't fathom how a lizard got through the processand they profusely apologized,Davis said.


Sugarland's lawyer, Gary Gilbert, has issued a statement regarding the one-point-five-million-dollar lawsuit former member Kristin Hall We are absolutely confident that this matter will be resolved in favor of Jennifer [Nettles] and Kristian [Bush]."


Keith Urban and LeAnn Rimes are among the stars featured in a new Wii game. According to M-T-V News, Celebrity Sports Showdown features musicians and sports icons like Mia Hamm, Sugar Ray Leonard and Kristi Yamaguchi battling it out in various games including canoe paddling, skiing volleyball, dodge ball and fighter-jet racing. The game will be released in time for the holiday season.


Tim McGraw graces the cover of the September issue of People magazine, on newsstands this week. The fall issue is dubbed the magazine’s Country Special, and McGraw’s story offers up a full interview and photo layout conducted while McGraw was on tour in June. Fans can get a glimpse into McGraw’s philosophy on life, which includes romance and tattoos. Meanwhile, Tim is set to release his first signature fragrance, McGraw by Tim McGraw, and his first children’s book, “My Little Girl,” which arrives in bookstores on October 21st. Fans can also catch him in the new film “Four Christmases,” which will be in theaters on Thanksgiving Day.



Dolly Parton comes to the defense of Jessica Simpson, who she sings with on Jess' upcoming album Do You Know. Dolly who wrote the title cut on the C-D, told PublicBroadcasting-dot-net, that she doesn't understand why Jessica always gets so much flak. She says, "She gets a lot of flak if she wakes up in the morning, and I don't understand that. She's a very sweet, down-to-earth country girl -- very much like myself. I'm compassionate toward her, and I think it's very unfair they give her such a bum rap."


Patty Loveless, Dwight Yoakam, Big & Rich, Willie Nelson, Vince Gill and Randy Travis have re-recorded country hits and classic standards for an album assembled by radio host Don Imus. The C-D, which comes out September 16th, benefits the Imus Ranch in New Mexico, which hosts children with cancer and serious blood-related diseases.


With Toby Keith's movie "Beer For My Horses" receiving great reviews, the soundtrack to the film hits stores today. The album's 12 songs feature a variety of talent, including Keith and Willie Nelson, Ted Nugent, James McMurtry, and Mel Tillis. The disc also includes Keith's label mates Trailer Choir and Carter's Chord, plus a duet between Mica Roberts and Toby. Rounding out the album's contributors are David Allan Coe, Rodney Carrington, Mac Davis, and Gina Gershon.


It's official. The release date for Brad Paisley's album of instrumentals, Play, is November 4th.


Faith Hill has teamed up with John Madden to write the introduction to the N-F-L Sunday Night Football Cookbook. Faith also contributes a recipe to the collection, which includes concoctions by players, N-F-L alumni and sportscasters. The book will be in stores on September 2nd.


Tim McGraw has reportedly banned himself from drinking beer. McGraw says he has learned over time that he cannot drink in moderation, so he has given up beer altogether. “I’m not a moderate person, and I’ll be the first to say there have been times when things were taken to the extreme. I got really fat. I want to take care of myself,” McGraw said.


Kenny Chesney took part in practice with the New Orleans Saints training camp yesterday, running about a dozen plays with the team and catching passes from quarterback Drew Brees. Kenny said, "As good a shape as you think you're in -- and people know I work out pretty hard -- you get out here and you know what 'in shape' rally means. These guys are in unbelievable condition, and keeping up makes me feel like I'm hitting my marks."


Isaac Hayes and Bernie Mac, both of whom died last weekend, will soon be seen together in a new comedy movie, “Soul Men.” Hayes died Sunday at the age of 65 after he was found lying unconscious near his running treadmill. Mac died Saturday after a battle with pneumonia. He was 50. “Soul Men,” co-starring Samuel L. Jackson, is set to open November 14th. Hayes plays himself, while Mac and Jackson portray fictional backup singers who reluctantly agree to a reunion.
